Dear Brethren,

One need not search very far to find a list of famous Freemasons. The membership roster of our fraternity includes many of our country's founding fathers, political leaders, and captains of industry. This fact has led many people to believe that Freemasonry is an elitist organization. Is Freemasonry an elitist organization? On a social and economic level, it certainly is not! Our fraternity is composed of men from all walks of life, nationalities, faiths, and races. The diversity of membership, and the fact that we meet on the level, is one of the finest attributes of Freemasonry. I truly believe that the fundamental beliefs of our fraternity, Faith, Hope and Charity, are of interest to good men, and good men often rise up among their peers to become leaders of their communities, country, and business. Does the adherence to obligations made before God and man, a desire to do good unto all men, especially they who are of the household of faith make us elitist? The dictionary defines elite as the group, or part of the group that is the finest, best, or most distinguished. Freemasonry is an institution committed to making good men better men. If a man's desire to improve himself morally and spiritually makes him an elitist, I say "So Mote It Be."

Fraternally,
James T. Lind
