Dear Brethren,

The Cabletow. If you look for a dictionary definition of the word Cabletow, you will not find one. Apparently the word is uniquely Masonic. The Cabletow is the first of many symbolic items that is presented to our view during the Entered Apprentice Degree, and its purpose is explained in the Entered Apprentice Lecture. The explanation of Masonic symbolism and allegory is often layered and given in small doses, and is expanded upon as the candidate progresses through the Degrees. The purpose of the Cabletow, as explained in the Entered Apprentice Lecture, is very simple and straight forward. A deeper and more important purpose of it is explained in the Fellowcraft Obligation. In the Fellowcraft Degree, the length of one's Cabletow is explained. Do you know the length of your Cabletow? Probably not, for the length of our Cabletow is constantly changing as our situations and circumstances change. What may be a simple task today may be impossible tomorrow. While knowing the length of your Cabletow may be a difficult task, knowing the length of a Brother's Cabletow is impossible. A task that may be simple to some may be difficult or impossible to others, due to physical limitations, business commitments, or family obligations. A true Mason contributes to his Lodge to the best of his ability, and while his contributions may appear to be small, no one knows the level of effort that they may require of him. Never measure a Brother's Cabletow.

Fraternally,
James T. Lind
Worshipful Master
